What to do if you have an attack of back pain

4 out of 5 of will us suffer from back pain at some point in our lives.  The good news is that there is a lot you can do for yourself to relieve back pain caused by sprains and strains.

  • Keep moving. The temptation when your back is very painful is to lie still and not move a muscle but it’s actually important to keep moving, otherwise your back will stiffen up dramatically. Resting for more than a day or two does not usually help and may prolong the pain. It is generally in your interest to remain active unless your doctor tells you not to.
  • Take anti-inflammatory painkillers or paracetamol and apply either ice or heat pads, whichever suits you better.
  • Do not stay in any position for too long. Get up and stretch regularly. Build up gentle activity gradually day by day.
  • If the pain persists for more than a week, consult an appropriately qualified health care professional.
  • Backcare UK is a national charity which organises support groups and has a useful helpline. Find a group near you.

Please note:

If you have back pain and suddenly notice any of the following (very rare) symptoms, you should see your doctor immediately:

  • difficulty passing or controlling urine
  • numbness around your back passage or genitals
  • numbness, pins and needles or weakness in both legs unsteadiness on your feet
