Vinci PLC, the world’s leading concession and construction group, has saved hundreds of thousands of pounds on its healthcare insurance claims costs thanks to the TLC of 10 registered nurses.
The firm, which employs 164,000 people worldwide, has been depending on PMI Health Group for more than a decade to manage its employees ‘Vinci Healthcare’ scheme.
PMI Health Group provides the company’s UK division with its award-winning ‘Managed Care’ service ensuring Vinci employees.' receive prompt attention, quality treatment and make a speedy return to work in the event of illness.
Managed Care has also played a significant role in helping the employer reduce the cost of medical insurance claims, enabling them to keep control of premiums. It has also helped reduce the risks, and associated costs, of employee absenteeism by working closely with Vinci’s in-house Occupational Health team.
The service is led by Registered General Nurses rather than anonymous call centre operators, who are the first point of contact for Vinci and its employees alike. Every member of the Managed Care team is recruited not only for their expert knowledge, but also for their caring and compassionate qualities. It is these characteristics that have played a leading role in the relationship's success.
In one instance where a Vinci employee became severely ill following surgery for cancer, a Managed Care nurse went well beyond the call of duty.
With the patient's husband needing to return to work, he was unable to provide appropriate care and so the nurse advised that a 'Home Help' service was required to provide adequate supervision - this, however, wasn't included in the patient's policy.
Mindful of the severity of the case, the nurse empathised with the patient’s circumstances and went the extra mile, liaising with Vinci to obtain additional cover. But the nurse didn’t stop there. She continued to help by making frequent support calls to the patient, and her husband, and ensuring a multidisciplinary team was always at hand to care for the employee – a task outside of the Managed Care team’s remit.
In a similar vein, PMI Health Group exceeded expectations when the company helped a Vinci employee have surgery at a hospital that wasn’t covered under the healthcare scheme.
The patient’s Managed Care nurse engaged in negotiations with the hospital and the consultant to successfully obtain admission rights to the hospital that the patient wanted. But it’s not just this type of behaviour that has added value to the service. The advice offered by the Managed Care team has proved invaluable for Vinci and is a key element of the relationship that the company holds in high regard.
While the expert health advice given by the nurse-led team has benefited employees considerably, the honesty of recommendations made about appropriate treatments has saved the employer hundreds of thousands of pounds in claims and premiums – more than £600,000 in claims on its medical scheme in the last six years alone.
There have been numerous occasions where Vinci’s dedicated Managed Care nurses have suitably advised healthcare scheme members that their condition could be treated more effectively in the public sector.
In one such occasion, a member was advised that his condition – a perforated bowel and formation of stoma – was best handled by the NHS, as emergency treatment was required. This saved the company a claim in excess of £14,000 on its healthcare scheme.
Cases like this have meant that while Vinci employees are always receiving the best possible care, the company is saving thousands of pounds on unnecessary claims and, in turn, inevitably higher premiums.
“The excellent healthcare scheme provided by PMI Health Group has protected us from changing insurers and has given our staff a strong sense of ownership over it.
“This ownership, proactive management of claims and considerable effort by PMI over the last 14 years means that we contain our claims to reasonable proportions and maintain cost-effective premiums.”
